Cliffs by the Roadside

Cliffs so high that trunks and roots can be confused
forest floor thickly plastered with leaves and pine needles
no man’s foot disturbed the surface for years
but here i stand
relieving my dog
cars whittling the silence
into sharp wet bleeding
beauty shook off as the cold
